Excerpt from Owl Manor – Abigail, Book 2 of the Owl Manor Gothic Suspense Trilogy.
“At the top of the hill, I stopped, panting, and looked around. The diminished sun cast a muted light on massive folds of stark, white snow, rising and falling on the land all about me. The spindly trees looked like enormous black daggers against the white. Beyond the trees soared two separate rocky ridges, black and grisly like giant, decaying teeth in the mouth of some beast, lying in wait to devour anything that went its way. In between them lay a gully shrouded in a thick, eerie mist, rendering everything in that area invisible.
It was raw and savage, an inescapable reminder of the deadly side of nature, and my awe and exhilaration began to give way to a sense of dread.
Then the wind awakened. It came in gusts, bellowing, buffeting against the granite sides of the giant teeth, blustering and loud one moment before fading into silence, then rising to a crescendo once again. It churned the snow off the ground, dashed it at me, and tore the hat off my head. I spent the next few minutes trying to run after the hat in knee-deep snow, falling over face down, then finally giving up. My hair came loose from my bun and flew around my face as I watched the hat disappear. I decided I had reached the end of my excursion.
But when I turned to return, the path I had previously climbed was gone.”
