EXCERPT FROM OWL MANOR – THE DAWNING, BOOK ONE

One day at Owl Manor, everything came to a boil. Mr. Bradstone’s bedroom erupted in thuds, bangs, and crashes, accompanied by bellows and roars as if an angry bull were trapped there. Gilbert and Grenville raced up the stairs while the rest of the staff cowered in the foyer below.

Finding the door to the master’s room locked from the inside, they knocked urgently without success. Grenville threw himself repeatedly against the door. Finally, when the two men attacked the door together, it broke open.

The sounds quieted abruptly. They entered the room to find it in shambles – furniture turned over, paintings hanging askew on the walls, the mirror cracked, drapery in shreds, decanters and glasses broken on the floor, red wine spreading on the carpet as if the room itself bled. All this the master had managed to do in a matter of minutes.

Mr. Bradstone whirled around to see who had dared to enter, his lips drawn back in a snarl, his eyes crazed. Gilbert and Grenville exited the room in haste to stand outside the door with their backs to the wall.
Then they heard the master’s voice call out from within.
“Come…Gilbert,” he said hoarsely. “Do not…worry, I will not harm you.”

Gilbert peeked around the door to find the master sitting on the edge of his armchair, head down, shoulders heaving. When he looked up at Gilbert, the look on his face was that of someone defeated, lost, someone who did not know what to do with himself.

For a quarter of a century, the horrors at Owl Manor have been buried under dust and decay, forgotten and unheard.

Then Dolores hears the whispers.

Dolores, a young artist, feels the pain all around her. It is the subject of her paintings. Strangely, once the pain is on her canvas, it diminishes.

A fated encounter takes her and her two best friends to Owl Manor in the Rocky Mountains. Ignoring the rumors of a gruesome past and ghosts, they take up residence. What’s the worst that could happen?

But it is the past that has summoned Dolores.

The owls begin to circle the sky again. The whispers get louder, seeping into each of their souls. And Dolores, besieged by the pain of brutal murders in the manor’s history, has no choice but to paint.

For the lives of those close to her hang in the balance.

Inspired by authors like Edgar Allan Poe (The Raven), Daphne du Maurier (Jamaica Inn), and Shirley Jackson (The Haunting of Hill House), Owl Manor – the Final Stroke is the third and final book in the Owl Manor trilogy of Gothic Suspense novels. Newest review for Owl Manor Abigail, book 2 of the Owl Manor Gothic Suspense trilogy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2021

Great book
This was quite a roller coaster. The story is built in a way that makes you feel a part of it. You simply can’t stop reading but you do need to remind yourself to breath once in a while. The building of the characters is incredible. So is the story. You can actually see it in your mind and experience a boost of all the emotions that come together. I wish I could explain the atmosphere. While writing this I find myself trying to take a deep breath and simply stopping in the middle trying to think of the right way to describe the story. I think the best thing I can say is – -read the book. The author is talented. It’s not easy to give me the chills and she managed to do just that.

Excerpt from Owl Manor – Abigail

The Denver sun began to languish as the coach left town that evening and headed up the mountain road to Owl Manor, about an hour’s ride. A mist slithered in through the trees on either side of them, their branches sagging heavily under thick layers of snow. Clumps of knotty underbrush of different shapes and heights peered through the mist like a band of strange, hunched creatures. Elwood shivered as the horses trudged up the narrow path, the carriage rattling and shaking as it climbed the hillside. Here, the hand of man was less prominent, despite the numerous roads which had been cleared for travel.

A sudden flapping sound made him start. As he poked his head out to look, a flurry of brown feathers landed on a branch, settling into the shape of an owl. Elwood gasped as the raptor’s huge, yellow eyes fixed on him from under the tuft of feathers that lay over them, followed him as the coach passed, its head swiveling at an impossible angle.  What strange creatures these are, he thought.

He did not know whether to be relieved or not when he eventually reached the manor. Dark and silent, it loomed at the far end of a garden shrouded in ghostly white. The only signs of life were the flicker of light in some of the windows and the pale, wispy swirls rising out chimneys jutting up against the midnight blue sky. A lofty column of fir trees stood in the gloom at the far edges of the property, watching as this stranger invaded their world. And in the distance soared the massive, jagged shapes of the mountains, great giants in slumber.
