Excerpt from Owl Manor – Abigail:
“The wind howled and raged the night Abigail Moore returned to Owl Manor, spinning the November snow into wild gusts, painting the windowpanes white. When the knocker on the front door resounded repeatedly, Patty hurried to answer it, wondering who it could be. They had just finished dinner and were not expecting anyone. Many of the staff had left since Gilbert had passed away, and those who remained had been biding their time until they received instructions as to what to do. The flame from Patty’s candle dashed from side to side, sending frightened flickers up the walls as she reached the door. It opened with a creak, and Patty gasped. Dark hair blowing around a pale face in the swirling snow, it could have been the spirit of the woman who had died at Owl Manor twelve years ago. The woman who had been chased by ghosts. But, of course, Patty knew at whom she stared. It was Abigail, the daughter.”

Reviews for Owl manor – Abigail, Book 2 of the Owl Manor Gothic Suspense Trilogy!

5.0 out of 5 stars … “Owl Manor had been home to too much atrocity — it had been defined by it.” Reviewed in the United States on August 27, 2020 Verified Purchase

This is the second part of a trilogy and you really have to read Owl Manor – The Dawning first. In fact, I reread it in preparation of reading this book (time well-spent)…

Fourteen years after that horrific night, the owls descend once again upon the old manor… A few days later, Abigail returns to the only home she has ever known, Owl Manor. She catches the remaining staff by surprise, not having sent news of her impending arrival. Abigail has plans for the house, but will the circumstances allow her to make the changes? The staff speculate about what might have driven her back to the manor…

One year later, Owl Manor is opened for long term stays. Hopeful guests must be interviewed and pre-approved by Abigail. She is surrounded by a faithful staff led by Patty Green, upon whom she came to rely upon heavily. Soon, the manor is filled to capacity with guests, who have been approved for varying lengths of stay. The guests are Elwood King, Victor Highmore, Alan Shaw, Clarence Beechworth, Lavinia Thompson and Harriet Cooper. The story told from points of view Abigail, Elwood, Victor and Patty. Who has deep, dark secrets buried deep inside? Everything is not what it appears to be…

From chills running down your spine, to thrills that will keep you on the edge of your seat, and more… This story takes you deep into Owl Manor and its current occupants… You can feel the atmosphere surrounding you, enclosing you, terrifying you… Once you start reading, you will not be able to stop… The gifted storytelling by Ms. Harrison will leave you gasping for breath and wondering what could possibly happen next… When you get to the end, you will be left begging for the final book in this trilogy… I am (im)patiently waiting and Book 3 cannot come so enough… Owl Manor might be “a grotesque place with a grotesque history,” but I cannot get enough of it!

5.0 out of 5 stars  An exciting read!
Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2020 Verified Purchase

I eagerly awaited Book Two of the Owl Manor Trilogy and it was totally worth the wait. Book Two continues the story of Owl Manor with Abigail, the next generation to inherit Owl Manor and its dark legacy of unexplained murders, madness, “evil in the walls that seem to breathe” and owls who attack certain people and protect others.

Zita Harrison writes with such rich and descriptive language that I felt as if I was watching a movie instead of reading her book on my Kindle. She paints pictures with her words. I could visualize and actually feel I was “in the room where it happened.” The story line just flows. Although her genre is Gothic Horror, her style has a hopefulness that keeps it from being depressingly dark. Yes, there are those ghastly murders, ominous owls and spirits that drift from their world to ours (you’ll want to make sure your windows and doors are locked) but there is also the personal journey of the heroine, Abigail, who says at one point: “ The frost on the pane, which had seemed so ominous before, now reminded me of beautiful lace. Why had I not seen that before? Is the world, in the end, just a reflection of one’s state of mind?” Read the book to discover if Abigail is transformed or destroyed by the betrayals and horrors she experiences.

I highly recommend “Owl Manor: Abigail” if you are looking for an exciting read. Then together we can anticipate the final book in the Owl Manor Trilogy-“Owl Manor: Nightfall.”

5.0 out of 5 stars A thrilling sequel
Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2020 Verified Purchase

I just finished book 2 of the Owl Manor trilogy where the story begins after Abigail has grown into adulthood and living in New York . When she is jilted by her fiancé, she returns to Owl Manor where she can hide away from her heartache. Without knowing of the dark past of Owl Manor, she opens a lodge, and as the lodge fills with guest, the Owls return. So does a restless evil that could cost Abigail her soul.

Harrison has a gift for weaving a dark tale that keeps one glued to their seat. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

5.0 out of 5 stars  Owls and the Spirits of the Dead Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2020

Zita Harrison has penned a sombre and chilling sequel to her masterpiece of gothic horror, Owl Manor: The Dawning. Channelling Emily Brontë, she’s chosen just the right words to transport the reader back to those days of manor houses and ladies’ maids, a time that seems to be perfect for scenes of horror to unfold.

It’s a good idea to read the first book in order to have a full appreciation of how poor Abigail came to be such a cold, self-repressed person. I was concerned for the emotionally neglected child she was in The Dawning. It made me happy that Patty, the housekeeper to Rafe Bradford, the late owner of Owl Manor, was there to be supportive and nurturing to Abigail then, and again when she returns.

The first guests who appear as Abigail begins renting rooms in the Manor as a mountain resort fill out the cast of well-developed characters colorfully. Without spending a lot of time with each one, they’re still adequately endowed with unique personalities, moving the story forward at a good pace.

The effects of rising tension among guests, staff, and Abigail herself, as the owls reappear and all kinds of frightening supernatural activity occur, made me race through the pages until the climax of this excellent novel. I look forward to the third book in the Owl Manor trilogy!

“A phenomenal edge of your seat read!” – Amazon reader

14 years ago, Owl Manor trembled with echoes of madness, mysterious deaths and marauding owls.

In 1870, Abigail fled the horror of Owl Manor with her fiancé, Peter. But she carried with her the terrible notion that she is unworthy of love, instilled by her reluctant mother. If her own mother could not love her, how would anyone else?

She trusts no one and keeps herself buried in a crypt of churning emotions, away from the world. Deep inside, her soul screams at the thought of dying alone and unloved.

Now she is back. Abandoned at the altar, and with nowhere to go, she returns to Owl Manor. Back to the nightmares of violent rage and destruction, ghostly images. What really happened 14 years ago?

Enter Victor, the complete opposite of Peter, yet frighteningly familiar at times. And the owls circle the sky once again.

Inspired by authors such as Edgar Allan Poe (The Raven), Daphne du Maurier (Jamaica Inn), Carlos Ruiz Zafon (Shadow of the Wind), Owl Manor – Abigail is the second in the Owl Manor trilogy of Gothic suspense novels, and follows Owl Manor – the Dawning.

Excerpt from Owl Manor – Abigail

The Denver sun began to languish as the coach left town that evening and headed up the mountain road to Owl Manor, about an hour’s ride. A mist slithered in through the trees on either side of them, their branches sagging heavily under thick layers of snow. Clumps of knotty underbrush of different shapes and heights peered through the mist like a band of strange, hunched creatures. Elwood shivered as the horses trudged up the narrow path, the carriage rattling and shaking as it climbed the hillside. Here, the hand of man was less prominent, despite the numerous roads which had been cleared for travel.

A sudden flapping sound made him start. As he poked his head out to look, a flurry of brown feathers landed on a branch, settling into the shape of an owl. Elwood gasped as the raptor’s huge, yellow eyes fixed on him from under the tuft of feathers that lay over them, followed him as the coach passed, its head swiveling at an impossible angle.  What strange creatures these are, he thought.

He did not know whether to be relieved or not when he eventually reached the manor. Dark and silent, it loomed at the far end of a garden shrouded in ghostly white. The only signs of life were the flicker of light in some of the windows and the pale, wispy swirls rising out chimneys jutting up against the midnight blue sky. A lofty column of fir trees stood in the gloom at the far edges of the property, watching as this stranger invaded their world. And in the distance soared the massive, jagged shapes of the mountains, great giants in slumber.

Book 2 of the Owl Manor trilogy, coming next month!

Abigai lfront cover copy

The minute the doors closed behind us, I breathed a sigh of relief, calmed by the fresh, wintry air. Sounds became muted, the parlor and its inhabitants faded. I shivered from the cold, and Victor took off his jacket and draped it around my shoulders, his fingers lingering.

All at once, I was intensely aware of him.

This man who made me feel like strings on the violin I had attempted to learn to play in New York—tight, quivering, vibrating. His touch, his smell…it was all too much.

I jerked away, then said, “Thank you…for rescuing me.”

“I confess, I did it for myself.”

There was that flutter in my stomach again, that feeling that I was standing on the edge of a cliff. I looked up at him. He stood with his back to the doors, his face in the shadows, but the moonlight shone on fragments of his cheekbones, his chin, the glint in his eyes. He looked fiendishly handsome, I thought, swallowing the hysteria that surged in my throat. It had to be the brandy.

“I do not know what you mean, Mr. Highmore,” I murmured.

“Victor,” he said.

The strings on the violin became tighter and tighter, as though they would snap at any minute and collapse in shreds. Shaken, I looked away toward the moon, hovering in the sapphire sky above the dark fir trees in the foreground, and the massive, sleeping giants in the background, with their crests of snow.

When I looked back at him, he had come closer. Our bodies were mere inches from each other, but not touching. I wanted to turn and run back into the parlor, but I was swept up in the current of something undefinable that throbbed in the space between us. I had no will of my own.

“Do you not feel it, Abigail? The thing between us?” Victor whispered. My head swam. I stared mutely up at his shadowy face. “You can’t deny it. I can see it on your face.”

“I…” My voice wavered and I paused to steady myself. “As I said before, Mr. Highmore,” I said, trying to be severe, “I don’t know what you mean.”

“You’re afraid,” he said, still inches from me, still not touching. I felt the warmth of his breath on my face, the heat coming from his body. The scent of him was heady, intoxicating. “What are you afraid of, Abigail?”
